Hybrid Approach for Mixing Time Characterization and Scale-Up in Geometrical Nonsimilar Stirred Vessels Equipped with Eccentric Multi-Impeller Systems—An Industrial Perspective

Multipurpose stirring and blending vessels equipped with various impeller systems are indispensable in the pharmaceutical industry because of high flexibility necessary during multiproduct manufacturing. On other hand, process scale-up scale-down development transfer from bench or pilot to manufacturing scale, design so-called models (SDMs), is a difficult task due geometrical differences used vessels. The present work comprises hybrid approach predict mixing times scale for nonsimilar single top, bottom multiple eccentrically located impellers. developed based on experimental characterization time dedicated equipment evaluation vessel-averaged energy dissipation rate employing computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using single-phase steady-state simulations. Obtained data consequently develop correlation as function vessel filling volume rate, which enables prediction specific parameters. Predicted good agreement those simulated time-dependent CFD simulations tested operating conditions.
